Downspout Installation in Regina: From Roofline to Ground

A practical guide to planning the connections, wall runs and discharge route for your home.

When planning gutter replacement, it is easy to focus on the eavestroughs along the roof edge. The downspouts deserve equal attention: they carry the collected water from the gutters toward a planned discharge point.

For a Regina homeowner, the useful question is where the whole system sends water. Follow the route from the upper connection, down the wall and out into the yard before deciding what needs replacing.

The three photos in this guide were supplied by SHAAM GUTTERS and taken at Regina properties.

01 / THE ROOF CONNECTION

Start where the gutter meets the downspout

The outlet is the opening through which water leaves the gutter. Elbows change direction, bringing the downspout toward the wall or around an obstruction. These fittings and their connections belong in the installation plan, alongside the straight pipe sections.

Gentek’s rainware guide describes using elbows to position a downpipe and fastening its connections. Ask your installer which fittings suit your layout and how the selected product will be secured. [1]

In the brown-downspout photo, the upper run feeds a lower gutter. For a layout like this, ask the contractor to review both levels together, including where the lower gutter ultimately drains. The visible connection is only one part of that route.

02 / THE WALL RUN

Look at the route and support along the wall

The white downspouts in the first photo follow the wall beneath the roof overhang. For your own home, discuss where the pipe will sit relative to windows, doors, exterior fixtures and access routes.

Downspouts also need suitable wall support. Gentek’s guide specifies straps for its system, including support near the upper elbow. Your contractor should follow the instructions for the products being installed and choose suitable attachment points. [1]

Choose the colour after agreeing on the route. Ask to see a sample beside the existing gutter, fascia and siding so you know how the finish will look on your house.

03 / THE DISCHARGE ROUTE

Plan where the water goes at ground level

A replacement quote should explain what happens at the bottom of each downspout. Confirm whether the scope includes an elbow, extension or another approved drainage arrangement, and where the outlet will discharge.

The City of Regina’s homeowner guidance calls for extensions directing water at least one metre away from building foundations. It also advises keeping discharge on your property, at least two metres from shared property lines, and avoiding discharge toward neighbouring properties, sidewalks or stairs. [2]

Federal guidance recommends directing runoff toward a well-drained area at least two metres from surrounding homes’ foundations where possible. This broader recommendation is separate from the City’s stated minimum. [3]

The right route depends on the space and drainage layout of your lot. Regina advises preserving drainage swales and approved grades. If you are unsure how water should cross your yard, review the lot drainage plan before changing the outlet. [2]

04 / CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Keep the full route clear

Include downspouts when arranging gutter cleaning. Government of Canada guidance recommends checking eavestroughs and downspouts in spring and fall, with additional checks after severe storms, heavy rain or high winds. [3]

From ground level, note disconnected sections, visible damage and places where water escapes during rainfall. Photograph the location and explain when the problem occurs. Arrange professional help for areas you cannot safely inspect.

What to ask before approving an estimate

Use these questions to make the proposed work clear:

  • Which outlets, elbows and downspout sections are included?
  • How will the downspouts be supported?
  • Where will each downspout discharge?
  • Are extensions, removal and disposal included?
  • Does the project need separate grading or landscaping work?

Send wide photos of the roofline and close-ups of the areas causing concern. Include your Regina address and tell the contractor whether you want downspout work alone or a full gutter replacement estimate.
